646 Never [15 October 2004]

She falls to her knees
All semblance of some sanity
Erased
The tears streak her face
Like so many rivers
That have flowed before
She gave her heart
Only to have it break in two
When his voice remained silent
So far away and yet so close
Yearning to reach out
To grab hold of his arm
To keep him from walking out
To make him stay
To let him know what she wanted
But she couldn’t do it
Her arms wouldn’t move
Frozen by the fear
Of a discovery of a subject
That was already known
It was then she realized
She would do anything for him
She would protect him
With her very life
If it came to it
To feel the bullet tear her flesh
Would be less painful
Than the hurt that lingers
In every part of her body
Now that it knows
That it will never feel
That one’s touch
